He said the newly-inducted Punjab Chief Minister unfurls a new anti-Mafia era in Punjab.

New Delhi: In a major embarrassment for the Congress party, its senior leader Navjot Singh Sidhu Thursday praised the Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab government which has snatched power from his own party.
Sindhu, in a tweet, said, “The happiest man is the one from whom no one expects … Bhagwant Mann unfurls a new anti – Mafia era in Punjab with a mountain of expectations …hope he rises to the occasion , brings back Punjab on the revival path with pro – people policies … best always”.
Sidhu’s remarks came a day after he resigned from the post of Punjab Congress president. On the election result day, Sidhu had drawn flak for praising the people of Punjab for making an “excellent: decision to usher in change by bringing the AAP to power. When asked how could he say that despite being the Congress president, he had asserted that the people have chosen a change and they are never wrong. “The voice of the people is the voice of God. We should understand with humility and bow before it,” he had said.
Sidhu, Wednesday, had tendered his resignation in the backdrop of the Punjab Assembly election fiasco of Congress. “As desired by the Congress President I have sent my resignation,” he wrote on Twitter with a copy of his letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday had asked the party presidents of the five states where Congress put up a poor show during the recently-concluded election to step down. According to party sources, the move was initiated as a first step towards “reorganisation” ahead of the forthcoming polls, including the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, through a tweet, had informed that the resignations were sought to “facilitate the reorganisation” of the state Congress units.
Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, Uttarakhand Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal, Goa Congress chief Girish Chodankar, Manipur Congress chief Loken Singh and Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu were asked to resign, said party officials.
As per sources, the party considers Punjab’s loss as the worst as it collapsed after months of infighting mainly between Navjot Singh Sidhu and Captain Amarinder Singh. It is also believed that Captain Singh’s eleventh-hour replacement by Charanjit Singh Channi also cost the party, said Congress insiders.
