Congress MP R Sudha was injured during a chain-snatching incident on Monday morning while out for a walk in Chanakyapuri, one of Delhi’s most secure diplomatic enclaves. The Lok Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu described the incident as “highly shocking” and said she is “highly traumatised” after the attack, which occurred near the Poland Embassy around 6:15 a.m.
In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sudha said an unidentified man riding a Scooty snatched her gold chain and fled the scene. “A man wearing a full helmet and riding a Scooty approached us from the opposite direction and snatched my gold chain and fled,” she wrote. “As he pulled the chain from my neck, I have suffered injuries on my neck, and my churidhar also got torn in the impact.”

Sudha, who was accompanied by a companion during the walk, noted that the assailant’s slow movement made him appear non-threatening. “I somehow managed not to fall, and both of us cried for help,” she added.

Expressing concern over the breakdown of law and order in such a high-security area, she wrote, “This blatant attack on a woman, who is a Member of Parliament, in a high-security zone like Chanakyapuri which is full of embassies and protected institutions, is highly shocking to say the least.”
The Congress MP, who has been residing at Tamil Nadu House for the past year, questioned how safe women really are in the national capital. “If a woman cannot walk safely in this high-priority zone in the national capital of India, where else can we feel safe?” she stated.
She urged the Home Minister to ensure swift action in tracing and apprehending the culprit. “Sir, I have suffered injury on my neck, lost my gold chain weighing more than four sovereigns, and I am highly traumatised by this criminal attack,” she said.
According to a senior Delhi Police official, a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being reviewed to trace the accused. In the aftermath of the incident, security has been intensified around Tamil Nadu House and nearby diplomatic establishments.
