Colonel Noreen Shanet John has made history in Indian military culture by being the first woman officer to lead a training battalion in the Indian Army. Her recent assignment to head the Agniveer training battalion at the Madras Engineering Group (MEG) and Centre in Bengaluru marks a pivotal moment for women in military roles, showcasing their growing presence and acknowledgement in leadership positions within the Indian Armed Forces.
A Distinguished Military Career
Commissioned into the Corps of Engineers on March 7, 1998, Colonel John has dedicated more than 26 years to the Indian Army. Her career includes a variety of roles, such as serving as a Senior Group Testing Officer at the 14 Services Selection Board in Allahabad, where she played a crucial role in assessing and selecting candidates for officer commissions. Her dedication and excellence led to her receiving a Permanent Commission in January 2020, followed by her promotion to Colonel in January 2023.
Guiding the Agniveer Training Program
In her current position, Colonel John is in charge of training Agniveers, the new group of soldiers recruited under the Agnipath scheme. Her leadership is especially significant as it involves shaping the essential training and values of these recruits. The MEG and Centre, recognised for its engineering prowess, is vital in preparing soldiers to face various operational challenges, and under Colonel John’s guidance, the training standards are consistently high.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Colonel John has a strong military connection through her marriage to Colonel Monish Dass, VSM (Retd), who is also a former officer from the Madras Sappers. Their shared devotion to service reflects a family tradition committed to national defence.
