A senior official in the Bangladesh Army with known ties to Pakistan has been placed under surveillance for allegedly attempting to stage a coup. The order was issued by Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman after receiving intelligence about suspicious activities by Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, the Quarter Master General (QMG), aimed at replacing him.
Bangladesh general’s meeting with Pakistan
According to sources, Lt Gen Faizur Rahman, a known sympathizer of Jamaat-e-Islami, had been holding secret meetings with key divisional commanders (GOCs) without the knowledge of the Army Chief. In the first week of March, he allegedly called a high-level meeting with several top military officials. However, the Army Chief’s secretariat intercepted the development and sent a warning, leading to the withdrawal of key officials from the meeting.
Intelligence reports also suggest that in the first two months of 2025, Lt Gen Faizur Rahman engaged in multiple meetings with Jamaat leaders and Pakistani diplomats. These interactions raised suspicions, prompting General Waker-Uz-Zaman to place him under strict surveillance.

The development comes amid growing unrest in Bangladesh, with a surge in violence, rioting, and vandalism in recent months. Notably, properties linked to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s family have been targeted, including the Dhaka residence of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Last month, General Waker-Uz-Zaman addressed the deteriorating law and order situation, attributing it to ongoing political turmoil. He emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and unity within the armed forces.
“The anarchy we have witnessed is of our own making,” the Army Chief stated at a recent event.
Sources indicate that Lt Gen Faizur Rahman’s efforts to rally support from divisional commanders against the acting Army Chief failed, as he was unable to garner sufficient backing for his alleged coup attempt.
The situation remains tense as authorities continue to monitor the developments closely, ensuring stability within the Bangladesh Army amid the broader political and social unrest.
