Bangladesh Hindu Leader Murder: India has strongly condemned the abduction and brutal murder of Hindu minority leader Bhabesh Chandra Roy in Bangladesh, urging the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government to uphold its responsibility in safeguarding the rights and lives of minorities, particularly Hindus.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed India’s deep concern over the rising trend of targeted violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
“We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh,” Jaiswal said.

Pattern of Persecution, India Warns
India’s statement underlines mounting frustration over what it describes as the systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under Bangladesh’s caretaker government. Jaiswal emphasized that the latest killing was part of a recurring pattern of violence, where perpetrators continue to evade justice.
“This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government, even as the perpetrators of previous such events roam with impunity,” Jaiswal added.

The Indian government’s strong reaction also included a clear reminder to Bangladesh that such attacks cannot be dismissed as “media exaggeration” or isolated incidents.
India’s Consistent Advocacy for Minority Rights
India has consistently raised concerns about minority safety in Bangladesh, especially after last year’s controversial arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das at Dhaka airport, which had triggered diplomatic back-and-forth between the two nations.
Reiterating India’s policy, Jaiswal stressed, “We condemn this incident and once again remind the interim government to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities, including Hindus, without inventing excuses or making distinctions.”
According to Bangladeshi media reports, 58-year-old Roy was abducted from his home in north Bangladesh on Thursday afternoon. His wife told The Daily Star that her husband received a suspicious phone call around 4:30 PM from someone allegedly connected to the crime.

Half an hour later, Roy was forcibly taken from his premises to Narabari village, where he was allegedly beaten. He was later returned to his home in an unconscious state. Neighbors rushed him to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
As of Saturday, Bangladeshi authorities have not announced any arrests in the case, further intensifying concerns over the safety of minority communities in the country.
Diplomatic Spotlight on Bangladesh’s Human Rights Record
The incident has once again placed Bangladesh’s human rights situation under international scrutiny, with India calling for immediate and decisive action against those responsible.
India’s sharp response is expected to feature prominently in diplomatic discussions in the coming days, as both nations navigate a sensitive political landscape amid Bangladesh’s ongoing political transition under the interim government.
