In a significant health policy announcement, President Droupadi Murmu declared that all Indian citizens aged above 70 years will receive free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme. She made this announcement during her address to the joint sitting of Parliament.
President Murmu highlighted the rapid progress in establishing 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country, aiming to make affordable medicines accessible to all. She also emphasized that the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is currently providing free health services to 55 crore beneficiaries.

“Further, the Government is going to take yet another decision in this area. Now every elderly person above 70 years of age will also be covered and get the benefit of free treatment under Ayushman Bharat Yojana,” President Murmu stated.
The AB-PMJAY, the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance scheme, aims to provide a health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 crore families. This initiative is expected to greatly benefit the elderly population, providing them with crucial medical care without financial burden.

Hospital Empanelment and Management (HEM) guidelines under AB-PMJAY require State Health Agencies (SHAs) to empanel hospitals under the scheme, ensuring a wide network of participating healthcare providers.
