Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal informed the Rouse Avenue Court that mangoes were sent from his home only three times after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21. Additionally, he said that he had sugar-free sweets six times.
These details were provided during a hearing regarding his application to allow insulin inside the jail due to his diabetic condition. Arvind Kejriwal also requested daily online consultation with a private doctor for 15 minutes in the presence of his wife, Sunita Kejriwal.
The ED had alleged that Arvind Kejriwal was deliberately consuming mangoes and other food items to raise his blood sugar levels to create grounds for bail. Senior advocates representing Kejriwal argued against this accusation, emphasising his right to medical care and dismissed the claim as politically motivated.
Representing the ED, Special Counsel Zoheb Hossain claimed there were deviations between the home-cooked food Arvind Kejriwal was consuming and the prescribed diet by his doctor. The jail authorities’ counsel stated that insulin intake could lead to drastic drops in Kejriwal’s sugar levels, adding that his levels were normal on most days.
During the hearing, comparisons were made between the home-cooked food and the prescribed diet, with minor deviations noted. The court reserved its orders for Monday, asking the ED and jail authorities to file a reply to Kejriwal’s application.
Kejriwal’s diet, as per ED submissions, included various food items such as eggs, poha, namkeen, banana, upma, uttapam, roti, puri sabji, salad, rajma, rice, tea, mango, papaya, and sweets.
