Arvind Kejriwal in court: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, embroiled in the alleged liquor policy scam, launched a scathing attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday, denouncing his arrest as a tactic to discredit him and hinder his participation in the Lok Sabha elections.
He told the court “the sole purpose of the arrest is to humiliate me… to incapacitate me”.
Seeking interim relief before the Delhi High Court, Kejriwal asserted that the ED’s actions lacked substantial evidence or grounds for arrest, branding it a bid to undermine his role in the electoral process.
Accompanied by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who represented him in court, Arvind Kejriwal contended that the ED had failed to furnish any concrete evidence against him. Singhvi emphasized that the timing of Kejriwal’s arrest appeared suspicious, suggesting a deliberate attempt to undermine the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) before the commencement of elections.
Singhvi questioned the ED’s repeated summons to Arvind Kejriwal, highlighting that the refusal to respond to these summons should not be misconstrued as guilt. He criticised the agency’s reliance on statements from individuals implicated in the case, pointing out inconsistencies and bias in their testimonies.
The issue of selective prosecution was also underscored, with Singhvi highlighting the case of AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who was granted bail by the Supreme Court after being arrested in the same matter. The court noted discrepancies in the statements provided by the accused-turned-approvers, suggesting a lack of credibility in the prosecution’s case.
Arvind Kejriwal, labelled as the “kingpin” in the alleged scam by the ED, is currently incarcerated in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Despite being remanded to judicial custody until April 15, Kejriwal’s legal team continues to challenge the ED’s actions, asserting his innocence and condemning what they perceive as a politically motivated vendetta.
