Telugu superstar Allu Arjun was granted interim bail by the Telangana High Court just hours after being arrested on Friday in connection with last week’s stampede at Hyderabad’s Sandhya Theatre during a special screening of his upcoming film, Pushpa 2: The Rule. The stampede tragically claimed the life of a 35-year-old woman, Revathi, and left her nine-year-old son critically injured.
High Court Grants Bail
The Telangana High Court overruled a lower court’s decision to send Arjun to 14 days of judicial custody, citing the actor’s “right to liberty.” The Court noted, “Just because he is an actor… he cannot be held like this.” Arjun had petitioned the High Court after the lower court also denied a request to delay his arrest until Monday.
Controversy Surrounding the Incident
The stampede occurred on the night of December 9 when hundreds of fans thronged the theatre upon hearing of Arjun’s appearance. The actor, accompanied by his team, entered through the main entrance and spent approximately 15–20 minutes outside, which reportedly escalated crowd tensions.
Hyderabad Police alleged that no prior intimation had been given about Arjun’s visit, resulting in inadequate security arrangements. “There was no intimation from the side of theatre management or actors’ team… no separate entry or exit was provided,” said Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand.

However, Arjun’s representatives released a letter showing police were informed about the event in advance, contradicting the Commissioner’s statement.
Legal Charges and Arrest
Arjun, along with members of his security team and the Sandhya Theatre management, faces charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and voluntarily causing hurt. He was arrested from his Jubilee Hills residence, where he alleged that police followed him into his bedroom to take him into custody.
Following his arrest, a viral video showed Arjun kissing his wife, Sneha Reddy, before leaving with police officers. His father, renowned filmmaker Allu Arvind, was also present during the arrest.
Victim’s Husband Withdraws Complaint
In a dramatic twist, the victim’s husband, Bhaskar, withdrew the complaint, stating he was unaware it would lead to Arjun’s arrest. “I was not aware of the arrest. Allu Arjun has nothing to do with the stampede in which my wife passed away,” he said.
Arjun later expressed his condolences and announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh for the victim’s family. He also committed to covering the medical expenses for the injured child.
Political Reactions
The arrest sparked a political war of words. Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader KT Rama Rao criticized the authorities, calling the arrest the “pinnacle of insecurity of rulers.” He condemned the “high-handed behavior” toward Arjun, stating the actor was being treated “like a common criminal.”
Telangana Congress chief Revanth Reddy dismissed allegations of political motives, saying, “All are equal before the law.”
Looking Ahead
The tragic incident has reignited debates about safety at celebrity events. Critics have called for stricter regulations to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The case now hinges on determining whether Arjun and his team had obtained proper permissions for the event and whether negligence played a role in the stampede.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues, with the focus on ensuring accountability for the tragic loss of life and injuries.
