According to the police, member of the BJP’s youth-wing, identified as Arjun Chowrasia, was found hanging in mysterious circumstances at an abandoned building near his home in north Kolkata’s Ghosh Bagan area.
Kolkata: Hours before the scheduled arrival of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Kolkata, a BJP worker was found dead inside an abandoned building on Friday morning. Shah is slated to address a rally in the city.
According to the police, member of the BJP’s youth-wing, identified as Arjun Chowrasia, was found hanging in mysterious circumstances at an abandoned building near his home in north Kolkata’s Ghosh Bagan area. According to sources, Chowrasia was supposed to lead a bike rally in the city. Meanwhile, the BJP has alleged the ruling Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) role and termed his death a murder. Shah also demanded a CBI probe into the death and asked the West Bengal government to submit a report to the Centre.
While the police did not find any suicide note near Chowrasia’s body, they faced tough protests from the local residents while taking away the body for a post-mortem. His sister, Sunita, said, “He (Arjun) was a happy man and I don’t trust the police. They (police) came at 7 am while my brother died at 2 am.”
Shah said, “We will ensure that those behind murder of Arjun Chowrasia are punished. The Home Ministry is extremely concerned about this political violence and has asked for a report from the West Bengal government.” Shah also met Chowrasia’s family members.
He added, “Yesterday, the TMC government completed one year of its term. Today, political murders have started in the state. BJP condemns the murder of Arjun Chowrasia. I met the grieving family, his grandmother was also beaten. BJP demands CBI inquiry into the incident.”
The West Bengal unit of BJP had earlier tweeted, “Arjun Chowrasia, 27, BJYM Mondal Vice-President, North Kolkata was brutally slaughtered and hanged. This continuous slaying of opponent political workers highlights the demise of democracy in West Bengal. 57 BJP workers were massacred in the last year. Humanity is smothered by the TMC!”.
