The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Patil of the K-North ward with immediate effect following allegations that he cheated Habiba Jaaferi, wife of actor Jaaved Jaaferi, of Rs 16.24 crore. The suspension order was issued on Friday and was formally served to Patil on Sunday, June 7.
According to the complaint filed in the matter, Patil and his associates allegedly persuaded Habiba Jaaferi to invest in a redevelopment project in Mumbai’s Bandra area by assuring her of high returns and significant profits.
The complaint further alleges that forged and fabricated documents were prepared and used as part of the alleged fraudulent scheme.
Following the complaint, Khar Police Station registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Mahesh Patil and five other accused individuals in connection with the alleged cheating case.
Investigators have alleged that the accused were involved in a conspiracy to induce investment through false representations related to the redevelopment project.
Accused Officer Reportedly Absconding
Police sources said that Patil has reportedly gone absconding after the FIR was registered. Authorities have been unable to establish his whereabouts since the case came to light. Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the suspended civic official.
Mumbai Crime Branch Takes Over Investigation
Considering the seriousness of the allegations and the substantial amount involved in the case, the investigation has been transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch.
Crime Branch teams are conducting raids at multiple locations in an effort to trace Patil and the other accused persons named in the case. Officials said further investigation is underway.
