The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is processing a request from the Government of Karnataka to cancel the diplomatic passport of alleged sex offender Prajwal Revanna, according to an official source.
This development follows a letter from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the cancellation of the passport held by Prajwal Revanna.
Revanna, a Hassan MP and JD(S) leader, gained notoriety after numerous pornographic videos surfaced, depicting him allegedly assaulting women of various ages.
The confirmation of the request being processed was communicated to The Hindu. “MEA has received a letter from the Karnataka government for cancellation of the diplomatic passport in respect of MP Prajwal Revanna. This is being processed,” The Hindu quoted a source.
Reports indicate that Revanna left the country using his diplomatic passport after the scandal broke. The MEA had previously stated that a diplomatic passport could only be revoked if a judicial order was obtained from a court.
“As far as the matter of revoking a diplomatic passport of a person is concerned, it comes under the Passport Act of 1967. And as per its provisions, a direction should come from the court. Only then it can be revoked,” said official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on May 2 during an official briefing.
Earlier in May, in a surprising twist in the ongoing sex video scandal involving JDS MP Prajwal Revanna in Karnataka, the National Commission for Women (NCW) revealed on Thursday that one of the female complainants has made a startling claim.
She alleged that a group posing as police officers coerced her into filing a false complaint under threat of harassment. This revelation led former Chief Minister and JDS state President H D Kumaraswamy to accuse the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the scandal of using threats against the victims.
Kumaraswamy expressed concerns that SIT officers were pressuring victims to fabricate statements favorable to the Congress government by threatening them with false prostitution charges.
“The investigating officers are going to the victims’ homes and threatening them. Isn’t it a fact that the SIT officers are intimidating the victims with false prostitution cases? Is this how the investigation is being conducted?” questioned Kumaraswamy, addressing Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda.
