Today marks a crucial juncture in India’s democratic process as voters in 96 constituencies spread across nine states and one Union Territory cast their ballots in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Simultaneously, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are set to determine their next state governments through state assembly elections.
By 9 am, voter turnout averaged at 10.35 percent across these regions. By 1 pm, the voter turnout climbed to 40.32 percent. At 3 pm it was 52.6 percent. By the end, it was 62.73 percent. The number may increase after the postal ballots are counted.
Nine states and one Union Territory, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jammu and Kashmir, are witnessing voting today.
A substantial portion of the seats, 42 out of 96, is distributed between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, marking the culmination of polling activities in the southern states for this phase.
Notably, Jammu and Kashmir is holding its first election since 2019, with polling held for the Srinagar constituency, one of the two Lok Sabha seats in the Union Territory.
Polling for the Anantnag-Rajouri seat has been postponed to May 25 following objections from the BJP.
This phase witnesses the dominance of non-aligned parties such as Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal and YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress. These parties, while not officially aligning with either the ruling or opposition blocs, have extended “issue-based support” to the Central government in parliament.
Today’s voting for Lok Sabha elections occurs amidst questioning of the Election Commission’s role by the Opposition, following notices sent to the BJP and Congress chiefs regarding controversial comments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi.
The Aam Aadmi Party received a respite as party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal secureed interim bail from the Supreme Court in the liquor policy case. Kejriwal, is slated to surrender on June 2, one day after the conclusion of the seven-phase election.
Several prominent leaders from both the BJP and the Opposition are contesting, including Union ministers Giriraj Singh and Ajay Mishra. Mishra’s son is currently incarcerated in connection with the farmers’ deaths in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Key Opposition figures in the fray today include Trinamool Congress’s Mohua Moitra, seeking re-entry into parliament after her suspension over the alleged cash-for-questions issue.
Other notable contenders include Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Trinamool’s Shatrughan Sinha, and National Conference’s Omar Abdullah.
Looking ahead, the next phase of elections is scheduled for May 20, with vote counting slated for June 4 after the culmination of the final phase on June 1.
As citizens exercise their right to vote, the outcome of this phase will significantly shape the political landscape of the nation and these respective regions.

For the Andhra Pradesh assembly election, till 1 pm, the voter turnout stood at 40.26 percent.
Odisha Assembly elections
In Odisha, 39.30 percent voters reached the polling booths till 1 pm on Monday.
