New Delhi: In a significant move, the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has imposed a ban on 18 OTT (Over-the-Top) platforms for disseminating “obscene and vulgar” content, including pornography, despite repeated warnings.
This crackdown comes as part of the government’s efforts to regulate digital content in India.
Among the platforms prohibited are Uncut Adda, Dreams Films, and Prime Play, which have been found to violate various sections of the Information Technology Act, the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
Apart from a ban on OTT platforms, 19 associated websites, 10 applications and 57 social media accounts linked to these platforms have been disabled for public access across the country.
The Ministry clarified that these actions were taken after careful examination of the content hosted on the banned platforms.

A spokesperson for the Ministry stated, “A significant portion of the content hosted on these platforms was found to be obscene, vulgar, and portrayed women in a demeaning manner. It depicted nudity and sexual acts in various inappropriate contexts, such as relationships between teachers and students, incestuous family relationships, etc.”
Furthermore, the Ministry emphasised that the banned content often included sexual innuendos and prolonged segments of pornographic and sexually explicit scenes devoid of any thematic or societal relevance.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to curb the dissemination of objectionable content on digital platforms. It also reflects the growing concerns regarding the impact of such content on societal norms and values, particularly concerning the portrayal of women and the proliferation of explicit material.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has urged citizens to report any instances of objectionable content encountered on digital platforms, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to maintain a safe and respectful online environment for all users.
