New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will never be rolled back as the government will never compromise over this issue.
Shah’s statement came after the Opposition parties alleged that the act in not in favour of the country as it compromises the sovereignty.
The Congress party has said that if elected to power, it will roll back the CAA. The Aam Aadmi Party, too, has strongly opposed the implementation of the CAA claiming that it will not be favour of the country.
Shah, in an interview to ANI, said that it is the government’s sovereign right to ensure Indian citizenship in the country. The Home Minister said that the Opposition is aware of the fact that the BJP will come to power.
“The INDIA bloc knows that they will not come to power. The BJP government has introduced the CAA and will not repeal it. The government will spread awareness across the country,” Shah said in the interview.

The Union Home Minister also clarified that the CAA in not “unconstitutional’ as it does not violate the provisions of the Indian Constitution. Shah’s clarification came amid Opposition criticism that the Act has violated the constitutional provisions and government has notified this with a selective approach.
About the timing of implementation of the Act, Shah said that all Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal, are engaging in “politics of lies” on this issue.
“The BJP had announced to introduce the CAA to provide citizenship to the refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan in its 2019 manifesto. So, the question of timing does not arise. It has a clear agenda and under that promise, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in both the Houses of Parliament in 2019. The implementation got delayed due to Covid,” Shah said.
