6.8 magnitude earthquake strikes south-eastern Taiwan: Report

Taiwanese agencies told that at least one building has fallen down in the town of Yuli. Tremor was also felt in the capital Taipei.

New Delhi: A 6.9 magnitude earthquake has reportedly hit south-eastern parts of Taiwan on Sunday. Since the earthquake witnessed in southeastern coast, at least one building has reportedly been collapsed. Meanwhile, the earthquake prompted Japan to issue a tsunami warning.

According to the report, the earthquake occurred at 2:44 pm (0644 GMT) about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the city of Taitung at a depth of 10 kilometres. Inititallt, it was told a 7.2 magnitude earthquake but later it was said a 6.8-magnitude quake. The weather bureau said the epicentre was in Taitung county.

Taiwanese agencies told that at least one building has fallen down in the town of Yuli. Tremor was also felt in the capital Taipei. Video surfaced on social media platforms showed that residents running hither and thither in panic.

According to the reports, the region had witnessed a 6.4 magnitude quake on Saturday and since then several earthquake tremors have been reported. The panicked citizens have been taking all possible measures to avoid casualties during the tremors. Meanwhile no casualty has been reported after the tremor.

Meanwhile, Japanese agencies have issued tsunami warning to the island near Taiwan. It has been speculated that one metre high wave may arrive in the region.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Taiwan after the tremor but later lifted the alert. Japan’s weather agency lifted a tsunami warning for part of Okinawa prefecture.
