Washington: In a suspected case of migrant smuggling, at least 46 persons were found dead while inside a tractor-trailer rig on Monday on a remote back road in southwest San Antonio.
After the police were alerted by a local resident, who heard cries of help, 16 persons were sent to a hospital. The police found all those admitted were suffering from heat-related illnesses and were severely dehydrated.
The police have taken three persons in custody but it is unsure if the incident is related to human trafficking or not. However, an official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said those in the trailer were in a presumed migrant smuggling attempt in South Texas.
In the recent times, there have been a record number of migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border. This has also sparked criticisms of the immigration policies of President Joe Biden. In July 2017, ten migrants had died after being transported in a tractor-trailer that was discovered by the San Antonio police in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
