Fugitive Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, wanted in India for his inflammatory speeches, has ignited controversy during his recent visit to Pakistan. A viral video circulating on social media, shared by Pakistan-based journalist Usman Chaudhary, shows Naik’s shocking behaviour at an orphanage where he abruptly walked off stage after taking offense at how orphaned girls were introduced as “daughters”.
The video captures Zakir Naik, who was greeted by the young girls at the event, leaving the stage in a huff just before being presented with a welcome memento. His apparent frustration stemmed from the girls being introduced as “daughters,” a term he objected to and “non-mahram.”
In Islamic terms, while “haram” refers to something that is sacred or prohibited, “mahram” is a related term that denotes a person whom one is forbidden to marry, such as a father and daughter. Therefore, a “non-mahram” refers to someone whom one can marry, meaning it is not “haram” to marry that person.
Zakir Naik’s Outburst Over “Non-Mahram” Girls
Imtiaz Mahmood, a UK-based social media influencer, explained Naik’s reaction, stating that Naik argued the girls were of marriageable age and, as such, could not be referred to as his “daughters”.

Mahmood noted that Naik’s strict interpretation of Islamic law led him to reject the affectionate term, as he viewed the girls as potential brides rather than daughters, causing confusion and discomfort among those present at the event.
The video of the incident has sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning Naik’s conduct, particularly in an environment meant to foster compassion for orphaned children.
India Condemns Zakir Naik’s Visit to Pakistan
Zakir Naik, who is wanted by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of promoting hatred and inciting terrorism, arrived in Pakistan on Monday for a lecture series across Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. His visit, reportedly at the invitation of the Pakistani government, was accompanied by heightened security measures. On Thursday, he even met with Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif.

India has strongly condemned Naik’s presence in Pakistan. A spokesperson for the Indian government remarked, “We are not surprised that a fugitive from Indian justice has received a high-level welcome in Pakistan. It is disappointing and condemnable, but not surprising.”
Zakir Naik’s History of Controversial Actions
Zakir Naik has been a controversial figure for years. His channel, PeaceTV, which he used to broadcast his views, has been banned in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka due to its inflammatory content. Countries like Canada and the UK have denied him entry. Since fleeing India, Naik has been residing in Malaysia, which has provided him sanctuary. However, during a recent visit to India, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that his country would reconsider its stance on Naik if sufficient evidence was presented regarding his involvement in terrorism.
Widespread Backlash
Naik’s behavior at the orphanage has drawn sharp criticism on social media, with many accusing him of lacking empathy and sensitivity, especially towards vulnerable children. His actions have also reignited the debate surrounding his controversial presence in the region and his polarizing views.
