New Delhi: Two days after violence broke out in Uttar Pradesh after Friday prayers over comments made on Prophet Muhammad by ousted BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, a video has now surfaced on social media which purportedly shows two policemen raining blows on supposed rioters inside what seems to be a police station.
The video, shared by BJP MLA Shalabh Mani Tripathi, was captioned “return gift” and drew criticism from across the country for police brutality.
The 32-second clip shows two policemen thrashing nine men who try their best to block the batons but to no avail.
Although Shalabh Mani Tripathi did not share the location of the video, reports suggest the video was shot two days ago at a police station in Saharanpur, where protests and clashes had erupted.
On Saturday, a day after violence broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj over ousted BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s comments on Prophet Muhammad, the SSP had said one of the masterminds behind the violence has been detained and at least 5,000 unnamed accused have been named in FIRs.
Similar protests and incidents of violence had broken out in many parts of the country. Although there is no strong evidence till yet, the police in many of the states that saw violent protests said the role of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) cannot be ruled out.
In West Bengal’s Howrah district’s Uluberia, which saw heightened protests on Friday, the police have clamped Section 144 till 7 am on Monday. Internet services have been suspended across the district too.
During Friday’s protest in Ranchi, at least two people were reportedly killed while nearly one dozen were injured as violence erupted after namaaz.
