Bengaluru: A Tamil Nadu minister’s daughter ran away from the house, got married to her partner and managed to slip into Bengaluru and approach the Karnataka Police to seek police protection from her father, who has allegedly threatened the couple.
Jayakalyani (24), daughter of Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) minister PK Sekar Babu, Monday reportedly submitted a memorandum seeking protection.
Later, speaking to the media, she said her father is against her wedding with one Sathish Kumar (27) and earlier, when the couple had walked out of the house, the police had brought them back. “Sathish was illegally kept in police custody for two months and his family members were harassed. We have all required proof. We are both adults and the marriage is consensual,” said Jayakalyani.
She also said that the couple got married at a mutt in Hirehadagali in the Vijayanagar district of Karnataka. In a statement to the media, a representative of the mutt said although they do not promote love marriage, they heard out the couple and learnt that the woman was being forced to marry someone against her will. “Thus, we agreed to allow the couple to get married at our mutt,” the representative said.
Jayakalyani also said that Sathish, an active member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police on false charges on orders from her father. “I do not want any of his family members to be harassed anymore and seek protection for them and us,” she said.
