Visuals showing Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the case, being handed over by US Marshals to Indian authorities, have now surfaced on social media. The images capture Rana, in shackles, escorted at what appears to be a military airbase in California, moments before his extradition to India.
Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian national of Pakistani origin, arrived in Delhi on Thursday under tight security and was immediately arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He was presented before a special court and sent to 18 days of NIA custody. Exclusive visuals from Delhi’s Palam airport showed Rana – sporting white hair, a long beard, and dressed in brown overalls – being led by security officers into a waiting bulletproof convoy.
Who Is Tahawwur Rana?
A former Pakistani Army officer, Rana moved to Canada in the late 1990s, where he operated an immigration consultancy business. It is through this business that he allegedly helped David Coleman Headley, a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative, conduct reconnaissance of key targets in Mumbai between 2006 and 2008.

Headley’s inputs enabled ten LeT terrorists to launch the coordinated 26/11 attacks, which killed 166 people and injured hundreds more across iconic sites including the Taj Hotel, CST station, and Leopold Café.
Charges Against Tahawwur Rana
Tahawwur Rana faces charges of:
– Criminal conspiracy
– Waging war against India
– Offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA)
Sources in the NIA confirmed that Rana’s interrogation will centre on three key angles:
- His role in the 26/11 plot
- His links to Lashkar-e-Taiba
- The involvement of Pakistani state actors, including the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)
Inside the High-Security NIA Custody
Tahawwur Rana is currently being held in a high-security cell at the NIA headquarters in Delhi, where he is under 24×7 CCTV surveillance. A 12-member NIA team, led by DIG Jaya Roy, who was instrumental in securing Rana’s extradition, is overseeing his questioning.

Special arrangements have been made to provide food and other essentials within his cell to limit external contact. After the end of his custody, Rana is expected to be transferred to Delhi’s Tihar Jail, where he will be lodged under maximum security.
India’s Long Battle for Extradition
Rana’s extradition marks a significant diplomatic and legal victory for India, which had been pursuing his custody since his 2009 arrest in the US. The process faced multiple legal hurdles but culminated successfully in 2025, thanks to persistent efforts by the Ministry of External Affairs and the NIA.
