“Will take a serious view of all demolitions that took place after the Supreme Court decision was communicated to the mayor,” said the bench of Justices L N Rao and B R Gavai.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Thursday extended the no demolition at Delhi’s Jahangirpuri order for two more weeks and said status quo to continue.
The apex court’s order comes a day after the demotion drive was stopped midway by the Supreme Court, although reports of the drive continuing unabated kept coming in from the ground.
“Will take a serious view of all demolitions that took place after the Supreme Court decision was communicated to the mayor,” said the bench of Justices L N Rao and B R Gavai.
It was also learnt that senior advocate Kapil Sibal had asked the court to stop demolition drives across the country but Justice Rao said, “We can’t stop demolitions across country.”
The court on Wednesday had ordered to maintain ‘status quo’ on the action and had said it would hear the matter Thursday. Raja Iqbal Singh, Mayor of North MCD, had said that the civic agency will comply with the apex court’s order.
The civic body had started the eviction drive after Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta wrote a letter to the Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to identify and raze with bulldozers construction on land illegally occupied by Jahangirpuri “rioters” as soon as possible. The civic body, while issuing an order, announced to start demolition of properties which have been constructed on illegally occupied land.
Early on Wednesday morning, as many as nine bulldozers were seen rolling out in Jahangirpuri area and razing illegally-constructed structures. The drive was being carried out amid huge presence of police and paramilitary personnel in order to avoid threat to the law and order situation.
