RG Kar rape and murder case: The father of the deceased junior woman doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking an appointment and guidance as the family endures “tremendous mental pressure” following their daughter’s tragic death.
In the letter, the father expressed the family’s feelings of helplessness and requested a meeting with Shah, emphasizing their need for his insight and support.
The family has been struggling for justice after the semi-nude body of the on-duty woman doctor was found in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9, 2024.
The death sparked protests among junior doctors across West Bengal, who demanded increased security in hospitals, the recruitment of female police personnel, and swift filling of vacancies for healthcare workers. After 42 days of striking, the junior doctors ended their protest following assurances from the state government.

The initial investigation by Kolkata Police led to the arrest of a civic volunteer, but the case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court. Since taking over, the CBI has arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, the now-suspended officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, in connection with the case.
The victim’s mother expressed hope that Shah would grant them an appointment to hear their plight and help them seek justice. Despite the arrest of key figures, the family continues to feel the weight of their loss and seeks higher intervention for resolution.
The junior doctors had also started a hunger strike, demanding that their concerns be addressed, but called it off after a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on October 5.
