The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has ruled out the possibility of gang rape in the case of the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which shocked the nation.
In its charge sheet, submitted on Monday, the CBI has identified Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual worker with Kolkata Police, as the prime accused. According to the investigation, Sanjoy Roy raped and murdered the doctor in a brutal act that left the nation in horror.
The doctor, whose body was discovered on August 9, had reportedly suffered unimaginable trauma during the attack. Public outcry and protests from the medical community led to the case being transferred to the CBI. Nationwide protests erupted following the horrific incident, with medical professionals and citizens alike demanding swift justice. The CBI, which was given the mandate to investigate the case by the court, completed its probe in just two months.
The Charge Sheet and Court Proceedings
The charge sheet, which will be presented to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Sealdah this afternoon, names Sanjoy Roy as the sole accused, the NDTV reported. Roy, who was known to frequent the hospital, was arrested shortly after the incident by Kolkata Police. When the CBI took over the investigation, the police handed over Roy and the collected evidence to the central agency.

The central agency’s findings confirm that Sanjoy Roy acted alone, and the possibility of a gang rape was ruled out after thorough investigation. The charge sheet details Roy’s actions on the night of the crime and provides evidence that corroborates the CBI’s findings.
Nationwide Protests and Outrage
The doctor’s murder sparked widespread outrage across the country, leading to protests from medical professionals demanding justice. Doctors at AIIMS Delhi joined their Bengal counterparts in protesting the incident, calling for improved safety measures in hospitals and stricter punishment for those involved in such heinous crimes.
The outrage was further amplified by the involvement of prominent figures like Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Hospital, whose alleged negligence in handling the case has led to his expulsion from various medical bodies and eventual arrest.
Doctors in Kolkata, enraged by the hospital’s handling of the incident, began hunger strikes and protests, further intensifying the call for justice. The fast-unto-death protests in Kolkata underscored the gravity of the situation and highlighted the risks faced by medical professionals across the country.
Looking Ahead
As the case proceeds in court, all eyes are on the outcome of the trial, with citizens and the medical fraternity hoping for swift justice. The CBI’s charge sheet is expected to pave the way for the next steps in the legal process.
The tragic death of the doctor at RG Kar Hospital continues to be a painful reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by professionals in public service. With the nation’s attention now focused on ensuring that justice is served, this case stands as a critical moment in the ongoing fight against violence in workplaces.
