Rahul Gandhi had quit as the party president after the 2019 general election after Congress faced a drubbing in the hands of BJP.
New Delhi: With the process to elect the next Congress president beginning on August 21, sources said MP and senior party leader Rahul Gandhi has not yet responded to requests made to him to once again don the role of the president of the party.
Rahul Gandhi had quit as the party president after the 2019 general election after Congress faced a drubbing in the hands of BJP. Requests to Gandhi come amid a section of Congress leaders wanting a non-Gandhi in the top post. However, not all leaders are onboard the idea.
On May 13, Sonia Gandhi had said, “We are in dire need of reforms.” In her short but crisp address during Congress’s Chintan Shivir, Sonia Gandhi had also said that the party needs changes in strategy and the day-to-day functioning. “Resurgence is possible only with the right direction and collective effort and it won’t be avoided. The Chintan Shivir is an opportunity to discuss both national issues and do meaningful self- introspection,” Sonia said.
A source in the party said, the elections for the Congress Working Committee and other posts will take place after a poll to select a party chief.
Rahul Gandhi, for now, has set his focus on participating in the Congress’s Bharat Jodo (Unite India) yatra which is slated to begin on September 7. The party has said it will organise yatras from “Kashmir to Kanyakumari” across 12 states and two Union Territories in 15 days and cover a distance of around 3,500 km.
