Former President Donald Trump is preparing to receive a Boeing 747-8 aircraft, with a value of approximately $400 million, as a gift from the Qatari royal family. The aircraft is intended to be used temporarily as the new Air Force One, although this move has sparked controversy and has raised ethical and constitutional concerns.
What is the Boeing 747-8 ?
The Boeing 747-8, specifically the P4- HBJ is one of the largest and most advanced private jets in the world, it is also the most sophisticated aircraft of the 747 family. It originally belonged to Qatar’s Amiri Flight, the royal fleet used by the Qatari royal family and top government official but, now registered for private use.
The aircraft features gold detailing, rare wood interiors and artwork by Alexander Calder. It is designed to carry up to 89 passengers, it includes two full bathrooms, nine lavatories, private bedrooms and several lounges.
With the range of approx 8,000 nautical miles and combining cutting age aviation technology, the jet serves the ultra-wealthy individuals and royals as a symbol of prestige.
The aircraft is intended to serve as a personal presidential transport during Trump’s potential second term before being transferred to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation. “I think it’s a great gesture from Qatar. I appreciate it very much. I would never be one to turn down that kind of an offer. I mean, I could be a stupid person saying, ‘No, we don’t want a free, very expensive airplane,'” said Trump.

Legal exports have stated that if the aircraft is assisted by a foreign body even indirectly, this could cause a constitutional violation particularly regarding the Foreign Emoluments Clause, which prohibits US officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments without congressional consent.
Some conservative leaders, including Senators Rand Paul and Rick Scott, have also raised their concern saying it might pose risks to national security. Experts stated that turning the Boeing 747-8 would take a lot of changes which might take several years and cost a lot of money.
As the situation develops, it is yet to be seen how the Trump administration will address the ethical and legal challenges posed by this unprecedented gesture.
