PM Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress party after a revelations stemming from a Right To Information (RTI) emerged on Sunday, unveiling a decision made by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s government in 1974 to hand over the strategically significant island of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.
Describing this disclosure as “eye-opening and startling,” PM Modi accused the grand old party of compromising the integrity and interests of the nation.
Terming it a “callous” decision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the handover of Katchatheevu by the Congress government has angered every Indian. “Eye opening and startling! New facts reveal how Congress callously gave away #Katchatheevu. This has angered every Indian and reaffirmed in people’s minds- we can’t ever trust Congress! Weakening India’s unity, integrity and interests has been Congress’ way of working for 75 years and counting,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Katchatheevu, a minute 285-acre landmass nestled in the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka, stands as a remote outpost approximately 14 nautical miles off the coast of Rameswaram, India.
In 1974, a significant shift in ownership occurred when Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi of India and Sirima R.D. Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka inked an agreement recognizing Katchatheevu as part of Sri Lanka’s territorial domain. This landmark agreement heralded a new chapter, altering the island’s ownership.
Under the terms of this agreement, Indian fishermen were granted the right to fish in the waters surrounding Katchatheevu, allowing them to dry their nets on its shores. Additionally, the pact facilitated Indian pilgrims’ visits to the Catholic shrine nestled on the island, signifying a testament to the spirit of bilateral cooperation.
