Multan: Over 200 rotting bodies were found inside a room on the roof of the Nishtar Hospital’s mortuary in Pakistan’s Multan city on Friday. The Geo News reported that hundreds of human body parts have been recovered, prompting the Pakistan government to investigate the incident.

On social media, some unverified sources claimed that the bodies were found lying on the roof while others said they were found inside a room. The Pakistan government is yet to react to the incident.

The incident came to light when the advisor to the chief minister of Punjab, Tariq Zaman Gujjar, said a whistleblower “tipped him off about the rotting bodies on the roof of the mortuary at Nishtar Hospital”.

The Geo News quoted Gujjar saying, “I was on a visit in Nishtar Hospital when a man approached me and said if you want to do a good deed then go the morgue and check it out.” Gujjar added that when he reached the mortuary, the staff was not ready to open the doors, following which he threatened them of an FIR. It was only after the threat that the staff opened the doors.

Gujjar added that after the doors were opened, at least 200 decomposing bodies were found lying in the room. “All the decomposing bodies (of both men and women) were bare. Even women’s bodies weren’t covered,” Gujjar said.

When Gujjar asked the doctors to explain what is going on, they said the bodies are used by medical students for educational purposes. “Do you sell these bodies? I asked the mortuary authorities,” Gujjar said, adding, “They said it was not what it looked like as these were used by the medical students for educational purposes.”

“Two of the bodies on the roof were rather in the early stages of decomposition. Maggots were all over them,” Geo News further quoted Gujjar as saying.

Punjab CM Pervez Elahi took notice of the incident and sought a report from the Punjab specialised healthcare and medical education secretary. The Punjab government also formed a six-member committee to probe the incident after videos and pictures were shared on the internet.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Nishtar Medical University has also formed a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

Later, the Geo News reported that the HOD reasoned that the bodies were unidentified and handed over by the police to them for post-mortem and “if required” to be used for teaching purposes for MBBS students.
