California wildfire delays Oscar nominations, film premiers and events postponed

The Critics Choice Awards of the Oscar nominations, originally scheduled for January 12 in Santa Monica, has been postponed to January 26.

The devastating wildfires sweeping through Southern California have led to significant disruptions in the entertainment industry. The 97th Oscar Awards nominations announcement, initially scheduled for January 17, has been postponed to January 19, according to a report by Variety quoted by a news agency.

In an email to Academy members, CEO Bill Kramer expressed sympathy for those impacted by the wildfires. “We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you.”

Additionally, the deadline for Oscar nomination voting has been extended by two days to January 14, giving nearly 10,000 Academy members more time to participate.

2025 Oscars Ceremony 

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with comedian Conan O’Brien as the host.

The wildfires, described as “apocalyptic,” have caused widespread devastation. A fast-moving fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday night, threatening iconic landmarks and residential areas.

Nearly 100,000 people have been evacuated as firefighters battle blazes from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena. Prominent celebrities like Eugene Levy, Billy Crystal, Mandy Moore, Paris Hilton, and others lost their homes to the inferno.

Film Premieres and Events Postponed 

The wildfires have also disrupted numerous entertainment events. Film premieres for “Unstoppable,” “Wolf Man,” “Better Man,” and “The Pitt” have been canceled.

The Critics Choice Awards, originally scheduled for January 12 in Santa Monica, has been postponed to January 26.

The situation underscores the growing challenges posed by natural disasters in Southern California, impacting not only the region’s residents but also its globally recognized entertainment industry. Rescue efforts and disaster management are ongoing as the community rallies to support those affected.
