Nepal is voting for the fourth time for the local units since the restoration of democracy in 1990 while this is the second election for the local bodies since the Constitution was promulgated in 2015.

New Delhi: In a positive sign for the grassroot democracy in Nepal, more than 17 million people have till now taken part in voting to elect nearly 35,000 representatives in the local bodies across the country. Notably, voting in Nepal is underway to elect representatives for 753 local bodies for a period of five years.
As per reports, Nepal is voting for the fourth time for the local units since restoration of democracy in 1990 while this is the second election for the local bodies since the Constitution was promulgated in 2015. Friday’s local elections holds significance as these will mark the first periodic polls, which are the hallmark of democracy, of the federal republic.
As far as relevance of the election is concerned, local bodies bridge the gap between the government and the citizens. It always becomes helpful to connect the state with the people.
In 2017 local bodies’ elections, CPN-UML candidates won in 41% seats of local bodies. Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre) had secured the second and the third positions by registering victory in 32 and 14% seats of local bodies.
