The MeT department also said, “Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall with isolated thunderstorm/lightning is very likely over Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.”
New Delhi: In its latest bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Wednesday said a low pressure area over the central part of South Bay of Bengal may concentrate into a depression in the next 24 hours.
The weathermen added that the depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards towards the coast of Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours and then towards the coast of Tamil Nadu in the next 24 hours.
The bulletin adds that as a result of the depression, “Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorm/lightning activity very likely over Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal during March 2 to 6”.
It added, “Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorm/lightning activity over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Kerala-Mahe during March 4 and 6.”

The MeT department also said isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal during March 3 to 5 with extremely heavy rainfall on March 4 and isolated heavy rainfall on March 6. Isolated heavy rainfall also very likely over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on March 4 and 5.
It added, “Scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall very likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands during next two days and decrease significantly thereafter.”
The weathermen also warned of strong winds over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, along and off Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin Area on March 2. The wind speed may reach up to (40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph). On March 3, strong winds (45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph) very likely over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, along and off Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts and Gulf of Mannar.
The bulletin added, “Squally weather (45-55 kmph gusting to 65 Kmph) very likely over west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, along and off north Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh coasts on March 4 and 5. Strong winds (40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph) very likely over north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts on March 6. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.”
Meanwhile, the MeT department also predicted a western disturbance “with an induced cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and Pakistan in lower tropospheric levels”. As a result of this, the bulletin said, “Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall with isolated thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on March 2 and 3 and scattered activity over Uttarakhand on March 3.”
It added, “Isolated light rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi and northeast Rajasthan on March 2 and 3; over northwest Rajasthan on March 2 and over West Uttar Pradesh on March 3.”
