Mumbai: Former Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi passed away at approximately 3 am on Friday due to age-related health complications. He was 86 years old.
His son Umesh was quoted by the media as saying, “He had been admitted to the ICU and was under observation. He experienced cardiac trouble on Wednesday. He had been battling prolonged age-related health issues. We will be performing the last rites at Shivaji Park crematorium, and before that, the mortal remains will be brought to our house in Matunga.”
Joshi’s health had been fragile since May 2023 when he suffered a brain haemorrhage. This incident led to his admission to the ICU at Hinduja Hospital, where he remained in a semi-conscious state for a few days. With little hope of recovery, doctors advised him to return home to Shivaji Park, where he received care until his passing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Joshi who was also the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004. Modi said that as the Maharashtra CM, Manohar Joshi has worked tirelessly for the state’s progress. During his tenure as the Lok Sabha Speaker, Joshi strove to make our Parliamentary processes more vibrant and participative, the Prime Minister further added.
In a X post, the Prime Minister said, “Pained by the passing away of Shri Manohar Joshi Ji. He was a veteran leader who spent years in public service and held various responsibilities at the municipal, state and national level. As Maharashtra CM, he worked tirelessly for the state’s progress. He also made noteworthy contributions as a Union Minister. During his tenure as the Lok Sabha Speaker, he strove to make our Parliamentary processes more vibrant and participative. Manohar Joshi Ji will also be remembered for his diligence as a legislator, having had the honour of serving in all four legislatures. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”
