A week after the first phase of polling began in India to choose Members of Parliament through the Lok Sabha elections, the second phase of polling began in the country on Friday. The campaigning for the phase 2 ended on Wednesday.
In this phase of the Lok Sabha elections, a total of 89 constituencies are polling across 13 states. In phase 1, 102 constituencies saw polling across 21 states.
Which states to poll in phase 2 of Lok Sabha elections
In Kerala, all 20 parliamentary constituencies are slated for polling, signaling a crucial electoral battleground in the southern state known for its vibrant political dynamics. Simultaneously, 14 out of the 28 seats in Karnataka, 13 seats in Rajasthan, and eight seats each in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh will also witness polling, reflecting the diverse electoral tapestry of these states.
The polling for the phase 2 of the Lok Sabha elections will also take place in in Madhya Pradesh (seven seats), Assam (five seats), Bihar (five seats), Chhattisgarh (three seats), West Bengal (three seats), and the northeastern states of Manipur (one seat) and Tripura (one seat). Additionally, the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir will contribute to the electoral process with one parliamentary seat.
Notable candidates in Phase 2 of Lok Sabha elections
Prominent contestants include Congress leader Shashi Tharoor (contesting in Thiruvananthapuram), Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar (representing Thiruvananthapuram), Hema Malini (campaigning in Mathura), Tejasvi Surya from the Bharatiya Janata Party (running for the Bengaluru South Lok Sabha seat), Arun Govil (competing in Meerut), DK Suresh, the brother of Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar (running in Bangalore Rural), Rahul Gandhi from the Congress party (standing for election in Wayanad), former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy (seeking election in Mandya), Independent candidate Pappu Yadav (contesting from Purnia), and CPI’s Annie Raja (running in Wayanad).
