Kolkata: Veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Tapas Roy on Monday announced his departure from the party and resigned as its MLA on Monday. Citing disillusionment with the TMC leadership, Roy submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee.
Accusing the TMC and its chief Mamata Banerjee of abandoning him during challenging times, Roy expressed frustration over the party’s silence when his residence was raided by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 12. The TMC countered, alleging that Roy was pressuring for a ticket from the North Kolkata seat for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Speculation arose about Roy’s next move, whether he would join the BJP or any other opposition party in the state, though he said he would make that decision in due time. The TMC dismissed Roy’s allegations as baseless, questioning the timing of his resignation and pointing out his history of switching party allegiance.

Tapas Roy said maintained his integrity throughout his political career but believed some party members orchestrated the ED operation against him.
Despite attempts by TMC members to dissuade him, Roy resigned as an MLA and from all party and government positions. He had been at odds with TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay and had distanced himself from the party for some time.
Tapas Roy cited corruption allegations and the handling of the Sandeshkhali issue as reasons for his resignation. Roy accused the party of thriving under double standards, stating his loyalty was never reciprocated.
The TMC questioned the timing of Roy’s resignation, suggesting external pressures or personal motives. Senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee accused Roy of making baseless allegations to pressure the party for personal gain.
Despite TMC’s claims, Roy’s departure marked a significant shift in West Bengal politics. A former Congress leader, he joined TMC before the 2001 assembly polls and served as a five-time MLA from North Kolkata, solidifying his political influence in Baranagar since 2011.
