Kolkata: On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced an increase in the salaries of Anganwadi and ASHA workers, just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Effective from April 1, the Chief Minister revealed the decision amidst PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the state for the inauguration of several Metro projects and other engagements.
Banerjee specified that the remuneration for ASHA and Anganwadi workers would see a raise of Rs 750 per month. Previously, Anganwadi workers received Rs 8,250, but with the hike, their salary will now stand at Rs 9,000.
Additionally, Anganwadi helpers will experience a Rs 500 per month increase in their remuneration, as stated by Banerjee. Formerly earning Rs 6,000 per month, ICDS helpers will now receive Rs 6,500.

Expressing gratitude towards ASHA workers for their unwavering dedication, Banerjee remarked, “The ASHA workers are our pride as they work very hard. They support us in bad times. I am happy to announce that their salaries have been increased by Rs 750 from April.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated India’s first-ever underwater Metro route in Kolkata, marking a significant milestone in infrastructure development of the country. Additionally, he laid the foundation stones for multiple connectivity projects valued at Rs 15,400 crore.
The Metro railway services inaugurated by the Prime Minister on Wednesday also included operations from various stations, including Kavi Subhash Metro, Esplanade section of the Kolkata Metro, Majerhat Metro, Agra Metro, Kochi Metro, Meerut-RRTS section and the Pune Metro.
The underwater service forms part of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, spanning 16.6 km beneath the Hooghly river and connecting Howrah and Salt Lake. Three of the six stations are located underground and the underwater journey covers a 520-metre stretch under the Hooghly river in just 45 seconds.
