Kolkata: In a shocking incident, a woman was killed after a policeman allegedly fired several rounds of bullets outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on Friday. According to reports, the policeman shot himself dead after killing the woman.
While the deceased woman is yet to be identified, the police said the cop was identified as Kolkata Police constable Chodup Lepcha who had been on leave and had joined duty on Friday. The police added that they will investigate if Lepcha was depressed.
Sources said several other people present at the spot have sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to the National Medical College for treatment. However, the exact reason behind the firing is yet to be ascertained.
The incident also led to a frenzy in the Park Circus Seven-Point Crossing area, which is at a stone’s throw distance from the Bangladesh High Commission. According to reports, the woman was riding pillion on a two-wheeler and fell down after the bullets hit her.
Sources said, the woman died on the spot and soon after, the policeman shot himself in the head.
A huge contingent of police has now reached the spot and have already taken away the bodies. Preliminary investigations are on, said police sources.
