Ranchi: At least two persons have died while several others are feared dead after a train hit them neat Kaljariya in Jharkhand’s Jamtara-Karmatand area on Wednesday.
Jamtara deputy commissioner said the exact figure is yet to be ascertained. However, local sources told the media that at least 12 people are feared dead.
According to a media report, a few passengers leaped onto the tracks following a fire onboard their train. However, a train was coming from the opposite direction and the passengers got crushed.
However, the Eastern Railway CPRO has refuted claims of a fire, asserting instead that two individuals walking on the tracks were hit by the train. These individuals were not passengers but pedestrians on the tracks.
Rescue operations are currently in progress. Irfan Ansari, MLA of Jamtara, has announced that he is aware of the incident and will be heading to Jamtara, a district in Jharkhand. “I have instructed authorities to identify those accountable for this tragedy. Furthermore, we will address this matter in the Assembly… The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed,” stated the MLA.
Medical teams have been sent to the spot along with ambulances, the deputy commissioner said.
