Ranchi: An IAS officer of Jharkhand’s Khunti district was arrested late on Tuesday night for allegedly sexually harassing a trainee engineering student of IIT, the police said.
Syed Riyaz Ahmad, an IAS officer of the 2019 batch, posted as the sub-divisional officer (SDO) of Khunti, was taken into custody on July 3. The IAS officer was booked after a complaint was filed against him at the Khunti women’s police station. A case has been filed under IPC sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), the police said.
The police said the woman was among eight other engineering students from outside the state who had visited Jharkhand for training. According to the complaint, the incident took place when the students were called to the residence of Deputy Development Commissioner’s on Saturday for dinner. The woman added that she was sexually assaulted by the IAS officer who found her alone.
The Khunti Superintendent of Police said when some of the guests and the IAS officer were questioned, the woman’s complaint was found to be true, following which, the bureaucrat was detained and subsequently, put under arrest.
