Jagdeep Dhankhar elected as India’s new Vice President, defeats Margaret Alva


Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with BJP chief JP Nadda, went to congratulate Mr Dhankhar on his election as the Vice President. All-opposition candidate Margaret Alva also congratulated Dhankhar on the win.

Jagdeep Dhankar wins Vice Presidential polls

New Delhi: NDA candidate and former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Saturday became the new Vice President of India. Dhankar defeated all-opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a huge margin. The NDA candidate secured 528 votes against Alva’s 182 votes.

As per the report, out of the total 780 electors, 725 cast their ballots but 15 votes were found to be invalid. The turnout was 92.94 per cent. NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar secured 74.36 per cent. He has the highest winning margin in the last six vice presidential elections held since 1997.

Modi, in a tweet, said, “I thank all those MPs who have voted for Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji. At a time when India marks Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, we are proud to be having a Kisan Putra Vice President who has excellent legal knowledge and intellectual prowess.”

Early morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voted when voting started. According to the data, a total of 543 Lok Sabha MPs and 245 Rajya Sabha MPs are the Electoral College. Out of the Electoral College, eight seats of MPs are vacant from Rajya Sabha while 36 TMC MPs had decided to abstain from voting.

Apart from NDA’s votes, Jagdeep Dhankar got support of non-NDA MPs like Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal, Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party, Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party, Akali Dal and the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena. These parties have a total of 81 MPS in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

All-opposition’s candidate Margaret Alva got support of nearly 200 MPS from opposition parties which are Congress, DMK, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party, Samajwadi Party and the Left parties. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena MPs of Uddhav Thackeray faction have also been supporting Maragaret Alva.
