In response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran has arrested over two dozen individuals, including high-ranking intelligence officers, military officials, and staff at the military-run guesthouse where Haniyeh was staying.
This assassination, carried out by Israel’s elite intelligence agency Mossad, involved Iranian security agents planting explosives at the guesthouse. Ismail Haniyeh, who headed Hamas’s political office in Qatar, was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran’s new president.
The attack, occurring just hours after the president’s swearing-in ceremony, is regarded as a significant intelligence and security failure for Iran.
Following the assassination, Iranian security forces conducted extensive searches of the guesthouse compound, detained staff, confiscated electronic devices, and scrutinised surveillance footage and guest lists.
Senior military and intelligence officials responsible for Tehran’s security were interrogated, with several placed under arrest pending further investigation.

The compound, managed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), housed Ismail Haniyeh in a room he frequently used during his visits to Tehran. The IRGC’s specialized intelligence unit for espionage is leading the investigation, actively pursuing suspects to uncover the network responsible for the assassination.
Iranian and Hamas officials have accused Israel of orchestrating the assassination, a stance supported by several US officials. Israel has not acknowledged responsibility for the attack but maintains its stance on eliminating Hamas’s military capabilities. According to reports, Israel initially planned to assassinate Haniyeh in May during his visit to Tehran for the funeral of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, but the operation was aborted due to overwhelming crowds posing a significant risk of failure.
Two agents, working under Mossad’s direction, eventually placed explosive devices in three separate rooms of the IRGC guesthouse in northern Tehran.
This assassination has been confirmed by officials within the IRGC, who now believe Mossad employed agents from the Ansar-al-Mahdi protection unit, responsible for safeguarding high-ranking officials inside and outside the country. The incident has highlighted a severe security breach for Iran, which prides itself on its intelligence capabilities. It has prompted Iran’s security forces to take swift and extensive measures to prevent further such incidents, but it has also raised questions about Iran’s ability to protect its key allies and maintain its regional influence.
