The United States Justice Department has charged an Iranian man in connection with an alleged plot by Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. Farhad Shakeri, described as an “Iranian asset”, is accused of conspiring with the IRGC to target Trump as part of an organized network aimed at eliminating critics of the Iranian regime.
The plot adds a new layer of tension to US-Iran relations, as Trump, who is set to return to the White House this January, has already survived two assassination attempts this year. One attempt in July left him wounded with a gunshot to his ear at a Pennsylvania rally, while a second attempt occurred at his Florida golf club.
Attorney General Merrick B Garland emphasized the seriousness of the charges, stating, “The Justice Department has charged an asset of the Iranian regime who was tasked by the regime to direct a network of criminal associates to further Iran’s assassination plots against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump.”
Details of the Alleged Plot
Shakeri, 51, allegedly told law enforcement that he had no intention of following through on the IRGC’s plot within the designated timeframe. Prosecutors believe Shakeri is now in Iran, having been deported from the US in 2008 following a robbery conviction. The statement reveals Shakeri’s alleged involvement in recruiting two men from New York, whom he met in prison, to kill an Iranian American citizen known for opposing the Iranian regime.

FBI Warnings on Iranian Threats
FBI Director Christopher Wray issued a strong statement on the charges, saying, “The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has been conspiring with criminals and hitmen to target and gun down Americans on US soil, and that simply won’t be tolerated.”
The US has designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization, underscoring its role in plotting attacks against prominent American figures and citizens critical of the Iranian government.

Heightened Security for Trump
After narrowly escaping two previous assassination attempts, protecting Trump has become a top priority for the US Secret Service, who have now deployed robotic patrol dogs to Mar-a-Lago. In his recent victory speech following the November 6 election, Trump said, “God spared my life for a reason, and that reason was to save our country and to restore America to greatness.”
This plot is a significant development in US-Iranian relations, reflecting ongoing threats and escalations surrounding figures critical of the Iranian regime.
