In a dazzling display of batting prowess, Phil Salt led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a commanding eight-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the iconic Eden Gardens in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
Salt’s unbeaten knock of 89 runs from just 47 deliveries stole the show, propelling Kolkata Knight Riders to their second consecutive home win in this season’s IPL campaign. Chasing a target of 162 runs, Salt wasted no time in launching an aggressive assault on the LSG bowlers, particularly targeting debutant Shamar Joseph.

Despite the early dismissals of Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Salt remained unfazed, capitalizing on some luck with a couple of dropped catches and inside edges that raced to the boundary. His innings was punctuated by well-timed shots, especially through the off-side, including a fifty off only 26 balls.
Partnered by Shreyas Iyer’s steady contribution of 38 runs from 38 balls, Salt guided KKR to a comfortable victory with 26 balls to spare, showcasing a dominant performance that significantly boosted their Net Run Rate (NRR), now standing at 1.688, the best among all teams this season. With four wins out of five games, KKR continues to assert their dominance in the league.
Earlier in the day, Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bowl first, putting pressure on the LSG batsmen from the outset. Despite a promising start from openers Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul, KKR’s aggressive bowling attack led by Mitchell Starc restricted LSG to a modest total. Starc’s impressive figures of 3/28 ensured KKR maintained control over proceedings, ultimately limiting LSG to a total of 161 runs.

Despite Nicholas Pooran’s valiant effort of 45 runs, featuring two fours and four sixes, LSG struggled to accelerate their innings, losing wickets at regular intervals. Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy further stifled LSG’s momentum with economical bowling performances, setting the stage for KKR’s convincing victory.
With their comprehensive win over LSG, KKR reaffirms their status as one of the top contenders in the IPL 2024 season, leaving their opponents struggling to find answers to their formidable prowess on the field.
