In a significant move, Indonesia has banned the privacy-centric search engine DuckDuckGo, citing worries over its potential use for accessing pornography and online gambling sites. This action aligns with the country’s broader initiative to enforce strict online content regulations, reflective of its predominantly Muslim population’s values.

Indonesia already blocks platforms such as Reddit and Vimeo as part of its stringent measures against sharing obscene content. Despite these efforts, the government continues to face challenges in tackling online gambling. Official data indicates that approximately 3 million Indonesians participated in online gambling last year, spending an estimated $20 billion—about 1.5% of the country’s GDP.

Usman Kansong, an official from the communications ministry, commented, “DuckDuckGo was banned following numerous complaints about the prevalence of online gambling and pornography in its search results.” However, the ministry did not specify how DuckDuckGo differs from other search engines like Google in managing such content.

Based in Pennsylvania, DuckDuckGo is renowned for its strong emphasis on user privacy, a feature that has garnered praise from privacy advocates worldwide. The company has not yet issued a statement regarding the ban.

This development underscores Indonesia’s ongoing struggle to regulate online content and highlights the broader challenges of internet governance in the digital age.
