In a groundbreaking move for India’s digital landscape, Airtel has signed an agreement with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite internet services to the country. However, the deal remains subject to regulatory approval before SpaceX can officially sell Starlink services in India.
A Strategic Collaboration
With this partnership, Airtel and SpaceX will explore potential collaboration avenues, as stated in a press release shared by Airtel. The telecom giant may retail Starlink equipment through its stores and offer satellite broadband services to businesses across the country.
A key focus of the alliance is to bridge the digital divide by deploying Starlink’s high-speed internet in rural schools, healthcare centers, and remote locations. Airtel and SpaceX will also evaluate how Starlink can enhance Airtel’s network capabilities, as well as the potential for SpaceX to leverage Airtel’s existing infrastructure in India.
Expanding Airtel’s Satellite Internet Reach
Airtel already has a strong presence in satellite broadband through its partnership with Eutelsat OneWeb. The addition of Starlink is expected to further bolster Airtel’s reach in underserved areas, ensuring seamless connectivity for businesses and communities with limited internet access.
Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel, emphasized the significance of the collaboration: “Working with SpaceX to offer Starlink to Airtel customers in India is a significant milestone and further demonstrates our commitment to next-generation satellite connectivity.”

He added, “This collaboration enhances our ability to bring world-class high-speed broadband to even the most remote parts of India, ensuring that every individual, business, and community has reliable internet. Starlink will complement and enhance Airtel’s suite of products to ensure reliable and affordable broadband for our Indian customers wherever they live and work.”
SpaceX’s Vision for India
Expressing enthusiasm about the partnership, Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, said, “We are excited to work with Airtel and unlock the transformative impact Starlink can bring to the people of India. We are constantly amazed by the incredible and inspiring things that people, businesses, and organizations do when they are connected via Starlink.”
She further added, “The team at Airtel has played a pivotal role in India’s telecom story, so working with them to complement our direct offering makes great sense for our business.”
The partnership is seen as a major step towards improving connectivity in India, particularly in areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is limited. While regulatory approval remains a key hurdle, industry experts believe the collaboration between Airtel and SpaceX could revolutionize India’s satellite internet ecosystem.
As the demand for high-speed internet continues to grow, this partnership is expected to provide more connectivity options for individuals and businesses across India, furthering the country’s digital transformation.
