New Delhi: In a surprising twist that has put the Congress on the defensive, veteran party member Sam Pitroda has reignited the debate over the BJP’s accusations of the Congress plotting a redistribution of wealth. Pitroda’s mention of an inheritance tax in the US has fueled the ongoing controversy, contradicting the Congress’s attempts to quell it.
The Congress swiftly distanced itself from Pitroda’s statements, asserting that they do not represent the party’s stance. Jairam Ramesh, a prominent figure within the Congress, took to social media to label the sensationalization of Pitroda’s remarks as a tactic to divert attention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contentious election campaign.
Pitroda himself clarified that his comments were made in a personal capacity, expressing regret that they were twisted to deflect attention from what he perceives as the PM’s misinformation about the Congress manifesto. He emphasized that his reference to the US inheritance tax was merely an illustration in a broader discussion.
Pitroda’s comments came in response to Prime Minister Modi’s relentless attacks on the Congress manifesto, particularly allegations of a wealth redistribution agenda. While the manifesto advocates for a nationwide census for affirmative action, it does not explicitly outline a wealth redistribution plan.
Pitroda criticized Modi’s approach, accusing him of underestimating the intelligence of the Indian populace and resorting to fear-mongering tactics. He defended the Congress’s focus on addressing economic inequality, highlighting the party’s historical commitment to uplift marginalized communities.
However, Pitroda’s mention of the US inheritance tax stirred controversy, with critics seizing on it to intensify their criticism of the Congress. BJP leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Amit Malviya, lambasted Pitroda’s remarks as evidence of the Congress’s alleged intentions to “plunder” hard-earned wealth.
Former Congress member and current BJP spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill capitalized on Pitroda’s comments to reinforce the BJP’s narrative, warning voters of the supposed consequences of supporting the Congress.
In sum, Pitroda’s inadvertent contribution to the ongoing debate has further complicated the political landscape, with both parties vigorously defending their respective positions amidst the heated election season.
