Bengaluru: In response to “sexist remarks” made by Shamanur Shivashankarappa, a veteran Congress leader from Karnataka, against a BJP candidate, Saina Nehwal, the renowned badminton player, said such comments are regressive and unacceptable.
Shivashankarappa’s statement, suggesting that Gayatri Siddeshwara, a BJP candidate from Davangere constituency, “belonged to the kitchen,” has sparked outrage and condemnation.
Saina Nehwal, expressing her dismay over the sexist jibe, took to her social media account to denounce such regressive attitudes towards women. She emphasized that remarks like “Women should be restricted to the kitchen” are unacceptable, especially coming from a prominent leader.

Saina Nehwal highlighted the irony of such comments in a country where women are striving to excel in diverse fields and contribute significantly to society.
The Olympic bronze medalist questioned the mindset behind such remarks, particularly when women across the nation are aspiring to achieve greatness in various domains.
Saina Nehwal also reiterated the importance of acknowledging and empowering women, rather than resorting to derogatory stereotypes and remarks that undermine their capabilities.
Nehwal also pointed out the contradiction between celebrating “Nari Shakti” (women empowerment) and perpetuating misogynistic attitudes.
She cited the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a step towards empowering women in politics, contrasting it with the disrespectful comments made by Shivashankarappa.
