New Delhi: The cVIGIL app, launched by the Election Commission of India, seems to have emerged as a powerful tool for citizens to report violations of the model code of conduct ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Since its introduction, the app has received over 79,000 complaints, showcasing its effectiveness in facilitating public participation in ensuring electoral integrity.
Remarkably, more than 99 percent of these complaints have been successfully addressed, with approximately 89 percent of them resolved within a rapid timeframe of 100 minutes. In a statement, the Election Commission said, “This underscores the app’s commitment to both speed and transparency in addressing reported violations.”

Among the reported complaints, a significant portion, around 73 percent, pertained to illegal hoardings and banners, reflecting the widespread concern over visual pollution during election campaigns.
Additionally, over 1,400 complaints related to the distribution of money, gifts, and liquor, highlighting the need to curb corrupt practices in electoral processes were received through the cVIGIL app.
Another notable issue reported through the app was defacement of property, with approximately 3 percent of the complaints addressing this concern. “Furthermore, instances of display of firearms and intimidation, as well as campaigning beyond the prohibited period, were also flagged, with a high resolution rate,” the Election Commission said.
Overall, the cVIGIL app represents a significant advancement in electoral oversight and aims to reduce campaign clutter by enabling swift reporting and action against violations.
The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, had emphasised the importance of citizen vigilance and utilisation of the app during the announcement of the Lok Sabha 2024, further highlighting its pivotal role in upholding the model code of conduct and ensuring fair elections.
