Kolkata: Bhojpuri actor-singer Pawan Singh, who had initially withdrawn his candidacy from the BJP for the Asansol constituency in West Bengal, has reversed his decision and announced his intention to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Singh said, “I will contest the elections to fulfill the promise made to the people and my mother. I seek your blessings and cooperation. Jai Mata Di.”
Singh had previously withdrawn from the electoral race following allegations from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing some of his songs of making derogatory remarks about Bengali women.
Initially included in the BJP’s first list of 195 candidates, Pawan Singh expressed gratitude to the party leadership but cited personal reasons for his earlier decision not to contest from Asansol.
The Asansol Lok Sabha seat is presently held by veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha of the Trinamool Congress, who will be contesting for re-election in 2024.
When questioned about Singh’s initial withdrawal, Sinha commented, “I don’t know him personally but have heard that he is a great artist and singer. Some of our people know him very well. It’s their (BJP’s) internal affair.”
Singh, popularly known as ‘Power Star’ in the Bhojpuri film industry, joined the BJP in 2014 and has gained recognition for his performances in movies such as Pratigya, Satya, and Har Har Gange.
Pawan Singh embarked on his musical journey at a tender age, captivating audiences with his singing prowess and enthralling stage performances. He ventured into the realm of Bhojpuri-language pop music as a vocalist, with his inaugural album “Odhaniya Wali” hitting the shelves in 1997.
In 2004, Singh expanded his artistic repertoire by stepping into the world of acting with his debut film “Rangli Chunariya Tohre Naam.” His talent shone brightly, leading him to clinch his first leading role in the 2007 movie “Rangli Chunariya Tohre Naam.”
The year 2008 witnessed Singh’s meteoric rise to fame with the release of the album “Lollipop Lageli.” The infectious beats and catchy lyrics of the track “Lollipo Lagelu” propelled him to stardom within the industry. Additionally, his album “Dont Touch My Body,” unveiled in the same year, featured the smash hit “Saniya Mirza Cut Nathuniya,” further cementing his position as a notable figure in the music scene.
