New Delhi: The Congress party on Friday released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The list contains names of 39 candidates, including that of senior party leader Rahul Gandhi.
According to the list, Gandhi will fight the Lok Sabha polls from the Wayanad seat in Kerala. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal will contest the polls from the Alappuzha constituency in Kerala. The list also contains names of candidates from eight states and one Union Territory.
The list also solidifies the party’s faith in its existing representatives, with sitting Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor fielded from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram for the fourth consecutive term.
Tharoor, a seasoned campaigner, has established a strong foothold in Thiruvananthapuram since 2009. He will face Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar in this seat.
The list contains 15 candidates from the general category, 24 representing the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, underlining Congress’s commitment to inclusivity and social justice.
Former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel will be contesting from the Rajnandgaon constituency, signalling the party’s intent to rally support in crucial regions.
Meanwhile, Tamardwaj Sahu, a former minister, has been fielded from Mahasamund, while Jyotsna Mahant is set to represent the party’s interests from Korba in Chhattisgarh.

On March 2, the BJP had announced its first list of 195 candidates. The party has reissued tickets to its 34 ministers, including two former Chief Ministers, for the upcoming elections. In a notable move, the BJP’s candidate list includes 28 women, 57 candidates from the OBC category, and 47 leaders under the age of 50. Distribution-wise, Uttar Pradesh will see 51 candidates, Delhi 5, and West Bengal 20 representing the party.
The BJP’s candidate list also features Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandavia, who will be contesting from Porbandar in Gujarat. Additionally, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has been granted the chance to run from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, where Congress heavyweight Shashi Tharoor has been serving as MP since 2014.
