IIT Madras reports 33 new Covid cases, total number reaches 145


Though more cases were reported, the campus will remain open for study purpose. College authority said that there is nothing panic about that as the concerned authorities are taking appropriate measure to handle the infection.

Chennai: With 33 more cases of Coronavirus reported at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Thursday, total number of positive patients reached 145 in the campus. To control spurt of the disease among students and teachers, healh teams have so far tested 4,974 samples from the college.

Amid rise in cases, Dr J Radhakrishnan, Tamil Nadu’s health secretary, has reportedly visited the campus. The health secretary, during his visit, asked to ensure that Covid-19 preventive measures are being taken. Zonal medical officer of the city has advised the students to wear face masks at all times and maintain social distancing and other related protocols.

“Situation is under control here. We are ensuring that the cluster doesn’t spread to other places,” said a senior health official from the state.

As per the report, initially three students were found Covid positive and then samples of more students were taken. The sample reported total 12 positive cases. As more samples were sent for testing, tally reached 111 on Tuesday. On Friday, 33 new cases were detected thus the tally touched 145.
